Navigating Tough Times

Recent trends in human resources indicate that the number of permanent, full-time, full-benefit workers is declining; the number of contracted contingency workers is increasing; and a larger number of part-time workers feel less attached to a location or organization. This isn’t exactly the perfect mix for high workplace morale.

Now is a time when conventional wisdom would have department managers tighten the purse strings. But what staff may really need is a fresh perspective and renewed sense of teamwork. In my experience, an investment in group activities and training can pay off big with improved confidence, camaraderie and, in turn, job performance.

Be More Critical of Your Thinking

In his best-selling book A New Earth, Eckhart Tolle reiterates what quantum physicists have been telling us for years—that all things are vibrating energy fields in ceaseless motion. What we perceive as physical matter—our bodies, the furniture in our house, the car we drive, the food we eat or the clothes we wear—is energy moving and vibrating at a particular frequency.

We may not realize it, but our thoughts consist of the same energy. They are just vibrating at a higher frequency than matter, which is why they can’t be seen or touched.

Most of us don’t think of thoughts as energy or as something we possess. Yet they affect our life experience more than anything we can see, feel or own.

Science has shown that positive thoughts vibrate at a higher frequency than negative thoughts, which is why they tend to boost our stamina, improve our outlook and increase our chances for success. But do you choose your thoughts as carefully as you would choose a car, a house or an outfit for a special night out? It’s time we look at our thoughts a little more critically and selectively—and choose only those that will empower us to reach our full potential.

Put It into Practice:

For three consecutive days, keep a log of all of your negative thoughts. Review the list to find your top three repeated or related thoughts, then replace those thoughts with more empowering statements. (For example, if you’re thinking, “I don’t know what I’m doing. I’m out of my league,” you might turn it around to, “My colleagues chose me for this role because they value my talent and perspective. I can bring something unique and important to this project.”)

In the subsequent days, each time you find yourself going back to those disabling thinking patterns, bring the new statements to mind. This awareness will create an alert sense of presence that helps you break the negative cycle. It is the first and most essential step to change your mindset and positively affect your life experience.
